REDD+ Consulting Competency
- REDD: Making the Promise a Reality. Ruddell, Steven, S. Collins, and S. Ruddell. International Forest Policy Track, Society of American Foresters 2011 Convention, Honolulu, HI. November 4.
- As an approved VCS AFOLU REDD expert, conducted validation of the third REDD methodology through the VCS's double approval process, for the issuance of the first global REDD credits. Conducted REDD eligibility assessment for VCS project in Kenya.
- VSC REDD AFOLU expert on team that conducted the second validation assessment for an Avoided Mosaic Deforestation of Tropical Forests methodology.
- Advises clients on REDD investment opportunities in tropical countries. Assisted a global environmental NGO on the feasibility of a REDD and CDM A/R project in Nepal. Worked on project idea notes in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Bolivia, Costa Rica, and Brazil.
- Advises on the establishment of National and Sub-national REDD programs, including capacity development. Conducts project development consulting to bring projects from idea to market.
- Writes project documentation and consults on methodology development.
- Provides project and risk management support through the entire forest carbon project development cycle.
- Provides training on forest project standards, carbon markets, and REDD capacity building.
- Consults on validation and verification preparation. Approved VCS AFOLU Expert for conducting validations of IFM and REDD methodologies. Qualified VCS, ACR, and CCB validator and verifier.
- Has working knowledge of forest inventory methods, and methods to measure, report, and verify emission reductions from forests internationally, including the use of the GOFC GOLD Sourcebook on REDD, and the 2006 IPCC Good Practice Guidance for Land Use, Land Use Change, and Forestry.
Selected REDD+ Consulting Assignments
- Evaluated the social and political feasibility of potential REDD+ offset project sites in Papua Province, Indonesia, Madre de Dios State, Peru, the Dzanga Tri-National Reserve region of the Central African Republic, and the Terai Arc region of Nepal. Met with and interviewed local stakeholders including community leaders, government officials, NGO organizations, forest industry, Indigenous Peoples organizations, and REDD working groups to assess project success.
- Researched available REDD methodologies, and methodologies in development that may be appropriate to consider to measure, report, and verify emission reductions. Identified the steps to move project through any further assessment, development and validation of the project design document, additional work to develop, refine and/or validate methodologies, and eventual registration of emission reduction credits.
- Assessment of the Khata Corridor and Lamahi-Mahadevpuri Complex within the Terai Arc region of Nepal. Assessed the REDD+ emission reduction feasibility and conservation co-benefit objectives of the project.
- In collaboration with The Nature Conservancy, Conservation International, Rainforest Alliance, and Community, Climate and Biodiversity Alliance, developed and delivered a 3-day REDD training course in Indonesia, Peru, Guatemala, and Congo for regional WWF staff and REDD partners.
